Someone call 911, I can't stop laughing.

Yom Kippur Pinatas. (Hat tip to Kesher Talk) I'm going to email my Rabbi and ask him if we break the pinanta before or after yiskor services. I mean, I step outside during Yiskor, so I would like to be there for the Pinanta breaking.&n

No, but I play one on TV

Saturday, 30 September 2006 6:12 P GMT-06
How fun was that?  I got to lead services this morning and pretend to be a rabbi.  It was very cool to be asked and very fun to do.  I learned the hard way why Rabbi Z and Cantor Shelly don't start without water at the bimah. Gulp.&

Hot on the heels....

Friday, 29 September 2006 9:38 P GMT-06
Hot on the heels with being honored on Rosh Hashanah (I read Haftorah on RH1), I get to play the role of Rabbi tomorrow morning at services.  I'm pretty excited.  It was a last minute invitation, as the Rabbi and Cantor are saving their voc

I was just checking over at Art By Larry Jones and things aren't flying off the shelves like I think they should be.  DId you look at his site and his t-shirts last month when I first bought them to your attention?  No? Go now. Art By

The Perils of Caffiene Withdrawal.

Friday, 29 September 2006 2:57 P GMT-06
This morning I said to my barista, "Mondo coffee, half caf." She then promptly fainted.  She knows I can drink two in a sitting--fully caffienated and piping hot.  Why on earth would I want HALF CAF? When preparing your soul for

Getting closer to a healthier weight.

I need to do some work on how I think about my body, but recently I had to buy pants up a size from where I've been the last couple years.  And I'd like to say, "Um, no."  But thinking in negative terms isn't going to help, so I n

You've heard of one upping someone.  If I have a bad plane story, you have a worse story, but that guy over there--his story takes the cake.  If I bought a desk for a great price, you got a bigger item at a greater sale, and that lady?

Happy Hebrew Dance

Tuesday, 26 September 2006 10:09 P GMT-06
Who knows what kind of search results that title will bring me in the future?  My class went better than expected, I need to start studying EVERY DAY.  I am, after all, the person who is trying to learn Hebrew for me, myself and I.  So

Am Echad Lyrics?

Tuesday, 26 September 2006 10:15 A GMT-06
Okay, I would have to Google in Hebrew to get the lyrics to Am Echad Im Shir Echad.  I tried to find them, but with a quick search I did not.  HOWEVER, I did find a public radio show that does an hour of Israeli Music once a week and then m

קשקשתא - שנה טובה

Monday, 25 September 2006 10:14 P GMT-06
Okay and I think this is just a little ditty wishing you a happy year!  Shanah Tovah!  (This doesn't count as me doing my Hebrew homework, not at all.)

עם אחד שיר אחד

Monday, 25 September 2006 10:09 P GMT-06
You have to watch this video.  They are saying "Am echad v'shir echad."  Which might mean "One people, one song."  It is that classic mid-80s celebrity song fundraiser.  I love that Israel has one, a catchy son

In case you were wondering.

It is a very, very bad idea to leave your Hebrew untouched for a month.  I don't care how much Jewish stuff you're doing, you've gotta study the Hebrew. Lesson tomorrow. Totally cramming now. Haven't felt this way since college. Kind

This weekend my mom called and asked me to add a name to the Me Sheberach list, which I did.  Another example of no longer feeling wierd about agreeing to pray for someone.  And prayers he needed.  He lived and now we pray that he seek

emotionally wiped out

Sunday, 24 September 2006 8:27 A GMT-06
Rosh Hashanah is supposed to be the fun high holiday (and it has been) but I don't remember being so emotionally drained last year.  Maybe because I didn't know what it all meant, maybe because I didn't plan so many events, maybe because I didn'

As far as yeast is concerned...

Friday, 22 September 2006 3:45 P GMT-06
As far as the yeast in my challah dough is concerned, raisins are sugar too.  My challahs over-inflated and popped when I put the egg wash on.  My challah knots are blobs.  To stay on schedule, I baked them instead of re-kneading them.

I love baking challah.

Friday, 22 September 2006 10:46 A GMT-06
Mmmm.  Today I woke up to a lovely fall day.  And by lovely fall day, I mean rain, cool breeze, hot tea fall weather.  Yummilicious.  Before I went to sleep last night,  I asked that I not get dreams about baking challah, but

but that is cool!

I found out two cool things by looking at my stats. 1.  I am the fourth 45th most authoritative blog on Chicago according to Technorati. 2.  I am the number one Google result for "replacing awesome."

maybe I just need to sleep.

Is the weather doing something wonky today?  I'd like to go and just have a good cry.  A project I was really looking forward to working on was taken off my plate this morning.  I had challah nightmares lastnight (annual event.)

And I mean it.

Wow.  I don't know how Steve managed 7 blog posts today, when I can barely muster these 50 words. I'm alive. I still love my job. I wish the windows opened in the AON building. I wish the room we were in had windows. And I realize

42 oz steak

Monday, 18 September 2006 10:02 P GMT-06
While I work on a team that is 80/20 men to women.  Really more like 85/15 or 90/10... I can't do the proper ratio this late at night.  But we went to Shula's for dinner and not ONE of them ordered the 48 oz steak.  Not.  One.

Expect Light Blogging

Monday, 18 September 2006 4:24 P GMT-06
I'm about to go blogging with my team... and by "go blogging" I mean go bowling.  Sheesh. Then it is being locked in a room for two days while we interface in person.  I mean, talk.  I mean... Don't expect much blogging fr

Silver Lining.

Things didn't go exactly as planned this weekend.  Instead of recount every misstep, I'm going to reframe it, feel good, and go to sleep. 1.  My clogged bathtub allowed me to hang out and play cards with Dondi while her husband tried to

Sunday, 17 September 2006 12:48 P GMT-06
I always appreciate being led to a piece I would not have read otherwise, so thanks Hugh!  He posted an article about the use of the term "disproportionate" relative to Israel, as used by western europeans, with a rather striking carto

Plumbing solution

Sunday, 17 September 2006 12:12 A GMT-06
Once upon a time, I blogged about my dream house with no water.  Water, in my experience, just leads to problems.  And now, hot on the heels my major attempts to stay positive... sigh.  A clogged bathtub.  Not a slow tub, a seriou
