January 2005

Finding the beat.

Monday, 31 January 2005 11:59 P GMT-06
Marching Band.  Hot, sweaty, long hours, bad music, sequins, good music, hard work, and sometimes fun.  Okay, a lot of the time fun.  The long seasons of high school marching band is where I've finally found my explaination for converting.  I sai

Stephen King: On Writing

Monday, 31 January 2005 10:52 P GMT-06
I'm reading Stephen King's On Writing.  I had no idea that he was a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, none.  Here is the best quote and something Al and I were just talking about."It starts with this:  put your desk in the corner, and eve

Did I mention...

Monday, 31 January 2005 10:46 P GMT-06
When Ronnie and I were at our quarterly Chicken Pot Pie night, he clued me in to an interesting website. The Racial Slur Database.I'm not suggesting you should go learn more Racial Slurs, but it is morbidly fascinating.

Sex in The City Moment--Does Age Matter?

Monday, 31 January 2005 12:29 P GMT-06
I feel like Carrie Bradshaw this morning--writing a new column about dating in the city.  My city, of course, is Chicago and I don't meet my men at performance art shows, but online.  I mentioned that I posted Craigslist Ad #3 last week.  Every ad

Interesting Stat Stuff

Sunday, 30 January 2005 10:17 A GMT-06
I had to get rid of my web counter that gave me a really good stat breakdown on my blog.  Unfortunately it was putting pop-ups and shit on people's computers and that isn't cool at all.  Here are some things I've learned from the stats the blog-cit

Store bought Challah

Saturday, 29 January 2005 12:52 P GMT-06
Since I went to the Heeb lecture on Thursday, I wasn't able to make my challah dough.  Last night I had to go to HarvestTime and buy challah from the bakery.  I am happy to say it isn't as good as mine.  Or maybe it is better than mine, since I've

You are so lucky, you get to choose.

Thursday, 27 January 2005 11:24 P GMT-06
After a month of talking nothing other than jew, jewish, judaism, conversion, shabbat, and hebrew--I'm getting much more concise in my answer, "Why are you converting?"  Actually the question is usually, "But you don't have a boyfrien

I'm allergic to you.

Thursday, 27 January 2005 10:52 P GMT-06
I have written before about how I loathe allergies and people with allergies.  I have always looked upon people who complain of hayfever and milk allergies with disdain.  I have considered it a character flaw attached to personality. And then a few

60th Anniversary of Auschwitz Liberation

Thursday, 27 January 2005 4:13 P GMT-06
I didn't hear one mention of this on the radio today, but Rabbi Schaalman addressed it last shabbat.  Today is the 60th anniversary of the Auschwitz Liberation.  Here are some things you can check out.The Greatest Story Never Told. The BBC.Survivors

Oops... I missed my first jewish holiday.

Tuesday, 25 January 2005 7:17 P GMT-06
I thought about it last night as I walked to improv and only just remembered.  Today is Tu B'Shvat--the Rosh Hashana for trees.

Sometimes I ask you to...

Tuesday, 25 January 2005 6:35 P GMT-06
Every so often I like to ask you all to review my blog on Blogarama.  If you look under the blog board to your right, you'll see a link that says "Review my blog."Please do.

Is it really only Tuesday?

Tuesday, 25 January 2005 6:18 P GMT-06
Gosh.  It feels like this week has been forever long.  My nephew Henry is now a week old.  It seems that my brother is moving back to Indiana after more than ten years away.  And me?  I bought a lot of jewish household stuff today at the Merchan

The Worst day of the Year

Monday, 24 January 2005 11:35 A GMT-06
According to British scientists, it is the worst day of the year.

If you build it, they will come.

Monday, 24 January 2005 10:18 A GMT-06
So late last night I posted my third personal ad on Craigslist.  The first one, if you remember, resulted in the dates with "Whew, that's expensive, I've got seven dollars" and the Consultants who's nice care made me feel ashamed for bein

Craigslist Leap--third times the charm.

Sunday, 23 January 2005 11:59 P GMT-06
Well, I've done it again.  I've posted another personal ad on Craigslist.  This time I asked for Jewish men and have gotten an awful lot of responses already and it has barely been two hours.  The responses seem honest and are really pretty good.

Christmas Shopping in January

Sunday, 23 January 2005 10:54 A GMT-06
No.  I'm not buying presents at the big sales, I went to a trade show and spent Friday and Saturday shopping for our 2005 Christmas Merchandise.  Wow.  Talk about being brain dead at the end of the day.  Two days of non-stop walking and looking a

The Truth about Challah

Thursday, 20 January 2005 5:51 P GMT-06
Okay, tonight marks my third go at Challah and tomorrow with be my fifth Shabbat.  So far every time I've kneaded the challah, I've been greeted by slightly different dough.  Last week was a late night baking disaster that culminated in coming home

Yes. The baby is here.

Wednesday, 19 January 2005 11:32 P GMT-06
Yes.  My twin sister had her baby boy on Tuesday at 2:11PM in Decatur.  Henry Ryman was 7 lbs and 13.8 oz, 20 inches long.  HE IS TEENY TINY.  I suppose all babies are, but I've never seen a baby that was less than a day old.  My parents and I g

Rental Cars and Babies

Tuesday, 18 January 2005 11:30 A GMT-06
Why does the rental car industry have such spite for me?  Why does a car cost $90/day in the middle of the winter?  I just want to go to the hospital and see my sister and get there before Henry is a month old.  Come on, I only ppaid $17/day in oc

Can I call it a shul?

Monday, 17 January 2005 10:50 P GMT-06
One look at my blog board and there is a little debate.  As someone who is attending a Reform Synogogue, am I allowed to say, "I went to shul."  The folks over there say I can't, it is only for Orthodox.  Here is where I get my permissio

I'm not being racist, I'm just saying your pig tastes funny.

Monday, 17 January 2005 10:35 P GMT-06
That was, hands down, the funniest line tonight at improv class.  It was a scene at a county fair between a judge and a farmer, about the farmer's pig.  It wasn't our first or last pig oriented scene of the night.  The first was a scene between me

Shabbat with the Golden Girls

Sunday, 16 January 2005 11:20 A GMT-06
I got to Shabbat services a little late on Friday night, after a combo of bus/ATM hunt/cab.  I snuck in and was shocked to find a full sanctuary.  It was an early service with a share shabbat dinner afterwards.  If you feed them, they will come.

No such thing as global warming.

Wednesday, 12 January 2005 11:11 P GMT-06
It's hard to ignore that something wacky is happening to our climate.  Perhaps todays 60 degree weather was an aftermath of the tsunami, but man.  This is crazy.  New Year's Eve was pleasant and last week we had real winter weather for the first t

A little Scale Victory

Wednesday, 12 January 2005 2:39 P GMT-06
I posted my first major loss at WW this week.  Granted, I haven't really lost since I left London and did gain 10 pounds between thanksgiving, my grandma's death, and christmas.  Last week I journaled my points, worked out at the gym or at home dai
